Atom CPU Price Drop

In order to prevent AMD grabbing low-cost desktop PC market share with its Sempron processors, Intel is planning to bring its entry-level desktop Atom 230 processor down to a price below US$29 in thousand-unit tray quantities, according to sources at motherboard makers.

The CPU is expected to launch in the second quarter this year. Asustek Computer's E-DT is expected to adopt the CPU, while other desktop PC makers are expected to follow its lead with similar low-cost products soon, noted the sources.

Intel said it cannot comment on unannounced products and pricing.
