The inquirer, amongst others has suggested that AMD and ATI will merge
The two firms are big players in their particular field but many believe that AMD do not have the money to take over ATI outright, and so are asking for a merger to go ahead.
Certainly with ATI runnning a "FAB-less" business model, this would benefit them by giving them some nice new FABs to use (AMD's Dresden and New York facilities), and thus give them better production and hopefully delivery when it comes to release time.
An interesting development for sure...but whether it will benefit consumers to have nVidia as the "Super Underdog" compared to the combined might of ATI and AMD: is another thing to be seen.
