According to an online source  AMD are preparing to do battle with Intel's up and coming flagship CPU - Core 2 Extreme QX6700 (Quad core Kentsfield). In an attempt to counter Intel's launch, AMD are readying 3 new 90nm Athlon 64 FX (originally intended for AMD's 4 x 4 platform) CPU's for release.

The three Athlon 64 FX processors will be marketed under the FX-70, FX-72 and FX-74 names and have clock frequencies of 2.6GHz, 2.8GHz and 3.0GHz, respectively, with all models having 2MB (2x1MB) L2 cache and a TDP (thermal design point) of 125W.

An interesting twist to this latest news is that the new FX CPU's will be utilising socket 1207, which is currently being utilised within the server arena. DigiTimes have suggested that through the use of socket 1207, instead of AM2 or 939; that this will in turn create an increased price premium for motherboard manufacturers in extra design considerations.

Unfortunately, the consumer will be feeling the pinch at the time of purchase. In the face of this latest development, Intel's QX6700 is looking potentially sweeter by the minute as far as over all cost is concerned.

I can hear the AMD fans rejoice regardless, but will this be a shallow victory, if at all? Feel free to discuss this article in our forum
