CPU cooler maker Noctua today presented its cooler owners with a neat little gift – they can get the NM-I3 SecuFirm2 mounting kit for upgrading Noctua coolers to the new LGA1155 socket totally free. The announcement is bound to bring a smile to the faces of hundreds of Noctua cooler owners.

Intel’s upcoming Sandy Bridge processors are based on the LGA1155 socket. There is lot of expectation about the new processors as they will be the fastest from Intel till date. For those of Noctua’s long term fans who do upgrade to the new processors immediately, there might be an issue of their existing heatsink not supporting the new socket. This is on account of a difference in the spacing of the mounting holes.

All recent coolers from Noctua already support both LGA1155 and LGA1156 sockets from Intel as they come bundled with the NM-I3 mounting kit. These include models such as the NH-C14, NH-D14, NH-U12P SE2, NH-U12P SE14, and NH-U9B SE2, among others. So the problem only affects owners who have heatsinks older than these models.

Responding to expectations of owners, Noctua is now offering this free upgrade using its NM-13 SecuFirm2 mounting kit. All older model owners just need to visit the Noctua website to place their request for the free kit. They will of course have to provide a proof of purchase of both a Noctua Cooler and a mainboard or CPU that is LGA1155 compatible. Photographs, scans or screenshots of both invoices will be acceptable.

In the words of Noctua CEO Mag. Roland Mossig, “We're determined to provide the best possible support to our customers and we've sent many thousands of NM-I3 mounting kits free of charge to users who wanted to upgrade to LGA1156. With Sandy Bridge just around the corner, we're pleased to announce that we'll extend this offer for LGA1155 users. Everyone owning an older Noctua heatsink that doesn't support LGA 115x out of the box will be able to upgrade to the new socket free of charge!"

The NM-I3 mounting kit is compatible with all Noctua retail coolers since 2005 and can easily be picked up from retail stores at a minimal service charge.

I leak tested for 24 hours, then powered up and let it all get warm and while watching it like a hawk for two hours. Everything fine, but the pump/res were making one hell of a noise. I then noticed that the whole kit wasnt the one I ordered from special Tech, and that they had sent me one that was 40 less than what I payed, so its all boxed up again now. Just waiting for them to get back to me (4th Jan when they open).

Back to the D14 it is. At least I have my second 5850 now :D
