Corsair K60 - TTL Edition

Corsair K60 - TTL Edition

Corsair K60 - TTL Edition

Inspiration.....?

Boredom is a terrible thing, sometimes it is caused by having nothing to do, lack of imagination or in our case this weekend too much to do but we didn't really want to do any more of it. Glancing around the office in desperation because Sunday night TV can generally only be endured if you are still recovering from Saturday night our eyes fell upon the Corsair K90 that we use on our 2011 test bench. We had considered some time ago about bastardising the K90 and K60 to make our very own K60 TTL Edition that lit up some months ago. Problem was Corsair assured us it wasn't possible and that the two keyboards were too different to make it work.

Thing was this weekend it just seemed like a good idea to try, oh boy were we glad we did because the end product although very simple and subtle we have absolutely fell in love with. It would take far too long to write a complete guide and due to the fact we assumed it wouldn't work we didn't take photos of us ripping apart two keyboards in fear of us having to bin them both at the end!

The basic's of it is:

Take one K90 and strip it all down.

Take one K60 and strip it down.

Place K90 top on K60 base.

Place K60 top on K90 base.

Assemble both keyboards back together and confuse your friends.

You do have to make some tweaks to the plastic on the K60 base but with time patience and a gallon of coffee it is indeed possible! The reason why we have decided to post about this on the front page is Corsair would like your feedback, if you think this is a good idea they may actually put this into production and create a K60 that lights up (our money is on K70 but K75 wouldn't be a bad bet either)

Anyways heres a look at some mad man with a hair drier and what few photos we managed to get, followed by another mad man in a video!

Some times the stupid ideas are the best ones, we decided to make our Corsair K60 keybaord light up just like the K90 does...

A K60 with backlighting is just what I want. Now, if only Corsair would start implementing this themselves.Quote

Not sure why you would want to do this. I would have been impressed if you had done this to a filco maybe. But Im guessing that the k60 uses the same pcb as the k90 with even the led terminal holes pre-drilled.Quote

I never use macros on my K90 - and I did just get it because; 1, my mouse was Corsair and I wanted things to match and 2, because I wanted LEDs - so if this was around I probably would have bought it. But I have no reason to change now.

There doesn't seem a massive price difference between the K60 and K90 either though. When I bought mine there was only a tenner between the two - and for that I can't see who would choose the K60 over the K90 tbh - considering the extra features you get on the K90.Quote

I can see a lot of people buying the ttl version, especially if corsair put some rgb leds in them.Quote

Yea I'd totally get one. I only got the K90 over the k60 due to it having a backlight.
I don't want or need the macros though.Quote

I also got the K90 over the K60 because it had backlit keys, never use the macros.Quote

I'm gonna say the majority of K90 owners (like myself) bought it over the K60 due to the small price difference and backlights not the macro keys. So it would be great for Corsair to release a full mechanical rgb keyboard priced around the K90.Quote

Very nice Tom. I purchased my K90 over the K60 due to the lighting, but one thing i don't understand is the tiny price difference between the two. The K60 should definitely be cheaper, then a K70 or K80 could fit in between them nicely.

Computer crazy
100% what I was looking for. I wanted the back lighting but have no real need for the macro keys. I ended up buying the K90 but this is what I would replace it with if it were to be produced. Also really wanted white back lighting on my keyboard but there is very limited options on normal keyboards and even less availability in mechanical keyboards. I would definitely buy one if it had white/multicolor back lighting and would most probably buy one if they just left it with blue back lighting. I must add I would also love the whole keyboard to be mechanical. Top job Tom, looks epic. Quote

Seriously.. that's -snip- awesome!

K60 with lighting is a must have!
The only thing that i'd like to change is the color. it has to be white!
For gods sake, there is no mecha that has white lighting and Cherry Reds..

This would be crazy..
And I'm pretty sure, Tom would like the white too

Please Corsair.. make this happen!Quote

I beleive that RGB leds are just too expensive, so even if crosair goes foward with this they problably wont add RGB leds because of the price.

Now, if I was to buy a keyboard now and there was something like a K60 with FULL, I mean every single key, F keys, Del, esc, etc etc Mechanical switches with backlight and the K90 wrist rest I would buy. Would be awesome. The durabilty of a Crosair keyboard in a smaller form factor.

I own a K90 btw, in case you didnt notice in the signature.Quote

Keep the K90's wristrest minus the macro keys and definite consideration. Change the switches to either MX Brown or MX Black and it's a no brainer for me.Quote

I have the K90 now and the lighted keys are great. (I won it in a contest) As others have said, I don't use the macros, but the keyboard is awesome to use. This is my first Mechanical-Keys keyboard and now I'm ruined.

As for the question posed, yes, absolutely, I would buy a lighted K60 keyboard if it was for sale. I would probably get three of them in time.Quote

I know. Browns are tactile and blacks are linear. For some reason, I like both but I don't like Reds...

EDIT: Probably worth mentioning I've used/owned a Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Stealth (MX Brown), DasKeyboard Professional (MX Blue), and Mionix Zybal 60 (MX Black). Tried reds and it felt too similar to membrane for me. Maybe I'd grow accustomed to it with more time.

@Corsair: Make it fully mechanical and I don't care what switch you use, I'd get it because it looks awesome.Quote

I agree with that actually. I love the feel of the reds in gaming - but don't particularly like typing on them.

I think I'll probably get blue next - just from trying a Razer Blackwidow in PC worldQuote

Red swithces are disgusting, so are blacks, there is nothing to them that distinguishes them between cheap rubber domes. Blues are without doubt my favourite switch, loud, clicky and tactile, just like a mech keyboard should be!Quote

I much prefer reds over bluesQuote

They have a longer travel, but the lack of resistance makes them feel cheap, IMO.Quote

The fact they are not spongy is the main thing for me. Also I've pretty much mastered being able to type at just at the activation point which has increased my WPM significantly.

Blues are great for typing, the best I would say, although I haven't tried browns. But for gaming they feel 'gritty'. So overall I much prefer reds.Quote

Browns are a great middle ground. They still have the tactile feel that makes Blues great for typing but they also feel semi linear in that there isn't a very obvious actuation point like the blues have. Personally using a keyboard with browns right now and it's by far my favorite one.Quote

They could add a button to the keyboard panel that changes the volume barrel to a colour selection wheel. Or reprogram the one of the macro profile buttons.Quote

That k70 looks pretty sweet, don't like the k60 because of the lack of full-size wrist rest and the coloured wasd keys look daft imo, but the macros from the k90 are completely unneccessary for me. The k70 strikes the best balance.Quote
