If it's a Nokia phone, then I recommend you either download Nokia PC Suite and use the back-up feature there. You can use the PC Suite software on the supplied disc, but it probably won't be the latest version.
Nokia PC Suite is now outdate by it's newer brother, Nokia Ovi Suite.
Haven't updated it in ages.

Of course, it possible to save them to pc! Just download and install a third party software design for your phone. And I recommend 3GMobile SMS + Contacts Backup, It work fine on my phone, and I guess it will word well on your HTC because they are on the same system—Windows Mobile 6.1
