Raja Koduri officially joins Intel as Chief Architect

Intel has officially confirmed that Raja Koduri, the former head of AMD’s Radeon Technologies Group, has joined Intel as Chief Architect and senior vice president of the company’s newly formed Core and Visual Computing Division.

In this position, Raja will work to improve Intel’s integrated graphics solutions as well as create high-end discrete graphics solutions for a range of computing markets, seemingly to claim back market share from Nvidia in the compute market, AI and data center segments.

Intel’s Chief Engineering Officer, Dr Murthy Renduchintala, had the this about Raja Koduri, saying that he was the most respected and experienced graphics and system architecture visionaries in the industry.

Raja is one of the most experienced, innovative and respected graphics and system architecture visionaries in the industry and the latest example of top technical talent to join Intel,

We have exciting plans to aggressively expand our computing and graphics capabilities and build on our very strong and broad differentiated IP foundation. With Raja at the helm of our Core and Visual Computing Group, we will add to our portfolio of unmatched capabilities, advance our strategy to lead in computing and graphics, and ultimately be the driving force of the data revolution.

Raja Koduri officially joins Intel as Chief Archtect

As the former head of AMD’s Radeon Technologies Group and Director of Graphics architecture at Apple, Raja Koduri is easily one of the biggest names out there in GPU-compute. His move to Intel marks a big change for the company, showcasing that Intel has big ambitions within the GPU compute market.

Intel’s renewed commitment to the GPU market will likely be the start of an interesting new age for computer graphics, especially in the compute market where Intel is keen to regain some market share from Nvidia. Part of Raja’s job will be to improve Intel’s integrated graphics solutions, though at this time it is unknown if Intel will be eying up the PC gaming market in the future. Intel did release a new GPU driver this week that delivered optimisations for recent PC games like Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, pointing towards an increased focus on the gaming market, at least when it comes to integrated graphics.

Raja will start working at Intel this December. Those who think that this deal should active some kind of AMD Anti-Compete clause should also know that the US state of California does not recognise these kinds of agreements, which means that Raja is free to work where he likes.
