Nvidia reveals their upcoming GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q mobile GPU

In the changelog for some of Nvidia’s latest Linux drivers, the company has unveiled their upcoming GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q GPU, a version of their existing GTX 1050 Ti mobile graphics card that is designed for thin and lite Nvidia Gaming notebooks.

Like other Max-Q GPUs, the GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q is expected to release with lower clock speeds than standard GTX 1050Ti graphics cards, decreasing the thermal output of the graphics chip while offering increased performance per watt. This design change makes this new graphics chip slightly slower than a standard GTX 1050 Ti, though it will make it usable with ultra-thin notebook designs.

This new graphics chip looks like Nvidia’s direct answer to Intel’s Kaby Lake-G series of processors, specifical variants with Vaga ML graphics. Versions with Intel/AMD RX Vega MH series graphics chips are directly compared to Nvidia’s GTX 1060 Max-Q in Intel’s internal benchmarks, offering a 7-13% advantage in the games tested.

It is clear that Nvidia want’s to see their graphics products in more thin and lite notebooks and other devices, though it is likely that Intel’s Kaby Lake-G series will steal a lot of this thunder in the low-end of the market.

Intel’s design takes up less space by using HBM2 memory while also combining both a CPU and a dedicated GPU onto a single package. These design changes will make Intel’s chip more attractive in this section of the market, provided Intel offers competitive pricing.
