Noctua Cooling Competition - Winning Entries

The Runner Ups

Noctua Cooling Competition

Second Prize NH-U12P Winning Entries

Alexhull24 entered twice in the competition but we felt his second entry showed a great amount of time and effort hence why it bagged him an NH-U12P!

Noctua Cooling Competition - Winning Entries

AMDFTW felt dancing was the way forward for his entry, really does look like he belongs on a podium at a sweaty club in Ibiza rather than listen to Limp Bizkit! Could make a very interesting advert as to why people should not use Cif cleaning products though........

A big thanks to all the entries, make sure you post back in the forums to show us how you are getting on with you well earned prizes. Obviously this competition could not have been possible with out the help of the guys from Noctua.

Overclocking, thats why we are here right? To eek out every last mhz from our components in an effort to beat the banker deal or no deal style! Trouble is when overclocking the trade of is an increase in heat [sad face].

Here at OC3D we have been lucky enough to have tested many of the quality coolers from Noctua, one of which the NH-D14 is as far as we are concearned THE best air cooler on the planet. Not only is it the best performing air cooler we have ever tested, but is also about as close to silent as you are ever going to get.

But now the time has come for us to share the love, thanks to Noctua we have a pretty large haul of Noctua Cooling goodies to give away to our forum members! If you take a look below theres not 1 but 3 NH-D14's to give away, 2 NH-U12P SE2's and 5 Noctua cooling kits!

With prizes like these you must be wondering what the hell you have to do to have a chance of getting your hands on them? Well its all very simple, you just need to be a member of our forums post in this thread and pretty much tell us why you should win. This could be pictures of your current cooling system and why it needs updating, it could be telling us why you think Noctua are epic, hey Im always in the mood for an ego boost tell me too! The possibilties are endless, videos, photos, anything the more effort you put in the better a chance you might have. At the end of August the OC3D team and Noctua will get together and decide who is best....

My current cooler is a Noctua. It's a bit pants on AMD and therefore I would like to try one of their new coolers just to see if it performs better on AMD.

I love my Noctua, it's the Saab of PC components, but I can't afford to replace it with a more expensive one as it cost me a pretty penny.

There. That's my entry Quote

I have a ZALMAN that gives me a load temperature of 82°C at 4GHz with an E5300.

In order for me to actually overclock I need a better cooler

I must say Tom, you're looking mighty fine today Quote

Currently using a Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme on the LGA775 platform. It's a great cooler but it is really out of date now and there are much better offerings on the market. I need to keep my system as cool as possible as it is an overclocking rig. I test the maximum potential of the system on air cooling with a low multiplier and maximum FSB wherever possible. The cooler the CPU, the better it works. If I could shave off 5 to 10c using a Noctua I'd be very, very pleased!

Yo, Toonshorty, no spicing up Mr Logan!

I've tested the Noctua NT-H1 and it is a great thermal paste.Quote

I like to run my system fast and quiet and I've spent a ton already trying. Noctua stuff is the best when it comes to quality and noise, I have a NF-P12 and its great. The NH-D14 looks amazing and exactly what I would like to buy if I could afford it right now to replace this:

I went from a Zalman something with load temp on 65 celsius it really sucked ! i bought it because it looked cool. then i heard a lot of good stuff about the D-14 so i bought the noctua D-14 and went right down to a max load temp of 37-39 its look amazing and its quiet , and the quality of the fans, damn !. you can just feel that its made by the best = Noctua! it was indeed all the money worth .

im kinda hoping for a third placeQuote

I wish I had a cool story on why I need 1 of these, but the truth is I dont. I'd love to have a quiet computer, and Im currently in the process of selling my current pc. Im looking at buying either the Silverstone FT02 or a Lianli to replace my ugly haf and having some free high class components inside would be lovely Quote

At the moment i'm using a standard AMD cooler and i'd really like to overclock but with a standard cooler.. hmm, i'm not going to risk it,

so it would be really nice if i had a decent cooler (like a Noctua). (:Quote

At the end of the month my new shiny computer should arrive. The CPU is an AMD Phenom II x6 1090T.

As soon as I did the purchase I thought to myself: if I want to actually do some overclocking without killing the innocent new CPU I need some better cooling. The options were 3:

1. Watercooling

2. My current cooler for my single core: ASUS Triton 81

3. The Noctua Cooler

- The first option is a bit overkill at the moment and the total cost to get the pump, res, blocks etc is just too much.

- The second option of the Triton 81. LetÂ’s be honest, the cooler is: HORRIBLE. The temperatures are just as bad as a stock cooler. And yes, the thermal paste is well set.

- The third option is and in my opinion the best one: a NH-D14 (or NH-U12P SEZ).

Even if I donÂ’t win this competition I WILL buy one. The reviews both from Tom and other sites are just off the charts! For this new computer I bought the best and will cool it with the best!Quote

The Noctua NH-D14 to me is the king of air coolers it combining a massive six heatpipe dual radiator design with an exquisite NF-P14/NF-P12 dual fan configuration which gives it the edge over any existing fun now on the market but the most attracting feature in this beautiful art of cooling is its silent fans which give you a Airflow of 64.9 - 54.3 CFM but obtain a low sound level of 19.6 - 19.8 dB which is so quiet that you can barely hear them, the NH-D14 is built for ultimate quiet cooling performance Topped off with a tube of Noctua's award-winning NT-H1 thermal compound as well as the new SecuFirm2 multi-socket mounting system, the NH-D14 is an elite choice for the highest demands in premium quality quiet cooling and it also has an amazing feature that is the NF-P14 fan is a 14'' fan which makes it a bit bigger than the heartsick and this allows it to suck cold air over your ram and by that achieving a dual cooling purpose. I have been overclocking for 10 years now and have seen many coolers through the years but never have I seen something that has an incredible cooling performance with such a low sound level which makes this cooler unique and stand on top of all that has been introduced till now, also the outstanding colours of the fans make it look amazing. I'm new to OC3D but I know tom is one of the kings of water overclocking and the fact that he has a NH-D14 says it all. Quote

Dear Mr Noctua.

Here you will find a picture of my current cooler, the Nh92 or whatever the model number is.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...uron/outer.jpg

I am quite a sad person in life, and like many a big cooler improves the mental size of my phallus.

Due to this I am feeling quite inadequate at this particular moment in time, because there are far bigger versions of my cooler out there.

I have tried to overcome this little problem of mine but it just won't seem to go away.

As you can see by other people's coolers mine pales in comparisson. Due to this I feel very insecure about myself and haven't been able to perform (ahem) as well as I normally would. My wife is threatening to leave me and all of my friends are laughing at me and have began to call me 'peewee'. Now as you know, this is not good for a man. A man should be the alpha male and able to show off his size very well, and boast about his prowess.

So with that said please help me.

Boomshanka (may the seed of your loins be fruitful in the belly of your woman).

Love,

Alien

The reason I want one of the prices (Mostly the cooling kit.) Is because I want my PC as silent as possible. And I know the Noctua fans can give me that because I own a Noctua NH-D14. My NH-D14 got my Intel Core i5-750 to 4GHz easily with good temps and I know it can take it even higher which is insane. It's the very best cooler I've ever had and it's so silent, but my PC is still not silent enough because of the noisy stock fans in my case. I'm a huge fan of Noctua and I recommend everyone I know that's interested in PC gaming to get products from Noctua so please give me some fans! Quote

Hai!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beat the banker hey? EPIC tune by Stenchman....

BSODS!!! AAAAH!!!! I did just headbutt myself, don’t ask how thats possible, but i did it! Shake side to side fast enough and something rattles, or is it just me?

Anyways, by the by...I now have to write on MS word, >.< Keeps crashing...soooo...

Whats the relation to these blue screens i see before me? A cooling issue maybe? Hmmm...how splendid.

Im on water, not literally, im sat on my epic ikea sofa bed looking at a screen around 60inches on HD projector hee hee, its not mine though . Im not that lucky. I WANNA BE IN GREECE!!! Someones going to have to come and save my sanity. Sanity??? UH??!? New word for me. TUNNNNNNNNNEE!!!! Im ramping out some epic Black Sun Empire! GET TO IT PEOPLE!!!! My Girl is away for 3 weeks, I cannot do this!!! Do what you ask?. RSI... For those who know, youll laugh ..or maybe cry. I have some lush advice for those of you who ...well...i dunno. Ive lost track now...Track? Railways!!! I like trains i do...

This is another epic competition on here!!! Im using me Steelseries Keyboard, om nom nom. I love how the family complain about the noise of me typing, I simply explain the situation, put up with it, or ill start singing. And thats not a good thing to be doing.

OMG¬!!! Another amazing tune!!!! Time for a cigarette, brb....

So yeah, that was a nice rollie, i must say, amber leaf, the true idiots choice.

Right, this cooling thing...AH hA! Computers...my favourite topic, omg. You should’ve seen the look on my partners mothers face when i got talking about computers on the phone to someone the other day., I think i scared her, i think she thinks im like a geek. But im no geek, im a god, well, a disciple of Tinytommys. ....TOM!!!! What am i writiting dude? OK ok ok ok...Noctua!!

LETS GO!!!

I RUDDY ROVE NOCTUA!!!! I remember having the old NFP12’s DAMN!!!! Those were fun, did you ever stick your tongue into them??? Ha ha ha, vortex dribble control. IT would go EVERYWHERE!!! And you all complained about the colour of the fans,. Tut tut, should see the colour of me in the morning, or the clothes i wear, Actually, i look like a noctua fan, I has my tweed suit on, slightly blondey ginger hair and a maroon top. HA HA HA!¬!! Im a walking billboard. 2 secs, gonna see if i can spin as fast as one....

Ok...maybe that didn’t work, sorry floor, didn’t mean to hit you so hard. Best thing is....i dunno/

But yeah, so im running on water now, got a ddc pro, some reservoir, some triple rad, some fans and some tubing. I don’t think I have coolant in there though, well, it was orange to begin with, and now its just like, omg....Did i just go to the toilet in my computer? 497 words!!! Touch typing. Am i waffling on? Sorry...

Back to topic, Trains? No ,....FANS!!! noctua, and all things noctua.

I loved my old fans, they were the dogs, and every review ive seen of all of the hardware is just intense. How can a company come storming into the race and simply take over? I do hope you are here to stay.

Few reasons why:

Do you know how annoying it is when your sat there, quiet bit of a movie and all you can hear is...bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.. ..”click click” bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....(ps, thats my pump and my hdd clicking. >.<)

I did always mean to go back onto air, but I never got round to, I lost a screw for my CNPS9700, so i sort of gave it to a mate, whos cat then used his computer as a toilet. Mind you , you should’ve seen my skill. I managed to make a bracket out of 12 cable ties and some rubber bands. It was lush!!

Is it ok to say i was jealous of a computer i built for a friend.? Because his was so quiet, it was simply lush. The clocking of his E6300 was epic too. I miss my old air cooling. I think air cooling a rig is a challenge. It adds to the fun of overclocking. It makes you have to take more things into consideration and be so precise on everything. Cos things go pop. With water, its just like,. RAMP IT UP FELLA!!!! And away you go...

But with air, its simply, an art. Keeping under the target temp you set yourself, making sure you don’t have to get your credit card handy. And well, as im using duct tape a fan shroud, then, you can sort of see my point.

I can safely say, I want to be back on air, everyone knows this. And seeing as im yet to get around to it, I think this would just be the ideal opportunity. Then im going to make my mum a garden water feature with my old watercooling. Some form of , god knows. Ill figure it out.

But air coolers are sculptures. Its honestly that simple, its a fine blend of what the eye wants, and what the heart needs. Seeing everything fully working and knowing your trusting everything on some crafted engineered piece of hardware just makes me smile. And noctua, you guys, yeah, i like you....

My rant over, but i may come back in a minute, my tea is still cooking and Im not really hungry... ....

PEACE!!!

ps...like my new british blue kitten????

Btw, listen to Claude Van Stroke, Deep Throat, TUNE!!!!Quote

From the coils of ancient Asia came two warriors.... For many years battle had been a rumour, but this time it was for keeps..

Finally the battle would commence, and there would be one clear winner...

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...ortal/pic2.jpg

Our two warriors were pitted together in Mortal Kooling, a fight to the death !

TTL would use his latest weapon of death, the Noctua NH 14.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...l/noctua14.jpg

Whilst the Alien would use his, the Corsair H50...

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...al/corsair.jpg

The two components levelled up, stared into each other's eyes and Alien fired his lazer eyes at TTL.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1.../lazereyes.jpg

THE OVERCLOCKING HAD BEGUN !

TTL responded at once with his lighting eyes of cold fuzion..

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...mlightning.jpg

Things got cooler, things began to freeze.. Even hell felt the chill as Alien started to crank on his front side bus. Things began to get hot... REAL hot...

The result came as no surprise. The wise warrior with experience won out. Bringing this epic battle to a conclusion...

Well, why do i need a noctua. hmmmm could be because i am becomming deaf from my current fan noise and my computer is dying from heat.

my cpu is an E6420 @ standard 2.13 GHz, and that is just too slow for me.

http://i2.sqi.sh/s_1/2FE/hotrunnotcopy.jpg

So this first little pic is my idle temps. not really that good, and this is on a cold evening. room temp is around 16-17 degrees c if not lower.

http://i2.sqi.sh/s_1/2FE/hotruncopy.jpg

my pc running full load, i didn't dare to run it any longer as i dont wont to overheat it too much/long. it wasnt the first run in prime95,

i had run another 5-6 minuts but accidentally closed it :Sso all in all around 12 min of prime95 and those were my temps.

oh and BTW the fan is set to my fan controller, and running full speed all the time

the computer was cleaned not that long ago, and else it would be running a lot hotter with all the dust and so on. I have really been scared that my pc

would burn down in the extreme hot sommer we had this year.

so as you might see i really need a new cooler. Some time ago i thought watercooling would be my only chance to control the temps. But it was too expensive

and i was afraid of leakage causing it to die. But then i found the NH-D14 review here, and realised it would be able to tame my pc.

I'm running my computer without a sidepanel, because that just adds to the heat, and that my pc wont handle.

also the sound levels are unbearable as you might be able to hear on this

okay maybe it is kind of hard to hear on youtube but the raw video is really noisy and so is the fan. it was bought with a kit to make it less noisy, but

it just doesn't make it silent enough. luckily i just bought a logitech G35, it can close out most of the noise. i can still hear it, but at least its less

noisy than when i used my steelseries siberia. the YouTube video really doesn't do [IRONY] justice to the noise levels [/IRONY].

http://i2.sqi.sh/s_1/2FF/14082010200.jpg

this is a really bad cooler, dont even remember which one it is i think it is a Thermaltake Silent TR2, with a arctic cooling Alpine 7, and as you see it

performs bad, and the hotter the heatsink becomes the worse it gets, because the fan just blows the hot air down on the cpu

well i think that was about the biggest factors why i need the noctua, and if i win anything i hope for the NH-D14, but the NH-U12P but sadly i cant use but

my case is too small for the cooling set.

I would really like to overclock my cpu as i dont really think it performs well at the moment, and i have no overclocking headroom, as the temperatures

already are too high.

The NH-D14 is the greatest air cooler i've heard about, and it fits so many sockets, which makes it great, because even when you upgrade to another socket you can take it with you. and still get the

greatest cooling. and even doing it nice and SILENT

The NH-U12P is also nice give most of the same good stuff as the NH-D14, but i suppose it cools a little worse.

Both fans are great, actually NOCTUA make great stuff. and if i win the NH-D14 i could even have it with me in my next build when i get the money. And then

i would donate my cpu with the old cooler to hell and then thay would be sure hell wouldn't be afraid of freezing over anytime soon.

oh and a final note ;D . ever since i've seen this video, i am afriad SWAT will break into my house

seizing my pc as the cause of Global warming, they might even drag me into court on the count of "The hot summer of 2010"

and the NH-D14 might be my only chance not to face multiple lifetime sentences for all the hot summer days my pc has caused. NOCTUA and OC3D.net, is my only shot please save me.

But dont worry i am using my laptop now, just to save the enviroment

sorry for the long post, but if you read the whole thing trough and still are alive, then its all good

just a little more ;DQuote

Unfortunately, I don't have a camera for pictures, so here is my best description:

CPU-Athlon II X4 635 @3.3

Cooling-stock

Case-Raidnax Scorpio from 2003

I am only able to hit 3.3Ghz on my 635, mainly due to heat. The stock heatsink keeps the CPU at idle, with just the loading of CPU folding, at about 55* C, with load from Intel Burn test up to about 75* C. Not only is the stock cooler a bad performer, it is loud. At relatively no load, the fan spins at 5000RPM, and reaching 6000RPM under load. My case's four front 80mm intake fans are mostly choked off my cables and 5 hard drives, although I plan on switching to an Antec 300 Illusion for better cable management, cooling performance, and upgradability (i.e being able to fit 140mm CPU coolers).Quote

My i5 is only overclocked to 3.3GHz, yet in OCCT testing, in a 6 minute custom test, it hits 85 degrees.

The processor is lapped heavily.

The cooler is a Titan Fenrir.

I'm FINALLY getting a decent machine, part of which is a Phenom II X6 1090T (Other parts are - GB GA-890FXA-UD5, Sapphire HD5850 Toxic @ a pair of OCZ 4GB[2x2GB, 1600MHz 8-24] kits.

I was planning to overclock, but the only decent coolers at my disposal are either the overpriced CM ones, or the rather flimsy (and old) MUGEN II.

I've been eying the Noctua coolers for quite some time now, and not only do I LOVE the color scheme, but the whole unit seems to be of insane quality.

I've read countless reviews of the NH-U12P, and the more recent NH-D14 (I must say, though, that I like the NH-U12P more, as it is smaller, and size does matter to me ), and I just REALLY WANT ONE!

Sadly, the representative for Europe has yet to return an answer to my question about availability here in Bulgaria

This will be a GREAT opportunity for me to both get my hands on their awesome hardware, and not need to settle with other (inferior, imo) products.Quote

Currently, my second rig has the stock Intel cooler on it. It works okay at cooling a stock part, but that's not why you join an OCing website forum, is it? I've overclocked my 920 to 4 gigs, but haven't had a chance to mess around with the 860. I'd love to see the differenece in temps between the two chips, as I've heard that they both can overclock greatly, but the 860 stays cooler.

I also currently have the Scythe Mugen 2, an would like to compare the two coolers to show how the Noctura coolers just own. My friend has the Corsair H50, and I'd love to show how the Noctura coolers also own against the enclosed water coolers as well! Quote

the cooler wont fit in my case due to the RAM i bought of you TOM

but the case fans would realy help get some better airflow,i am using one of the first noctua fans on the side and its not as good as the updated versions and the 120/140 would be so much better, the other fans would go on my CPU cooler to help get temps down as they have better cfm.

the TIM would be awsome as i am still using the stock stuff that came with my cooler

Hi,

Been over clocking current system and can get to 4ghz, but when running prime95 to stress test the system I get very high temps in the 90's within a minute of starting the stress test. I was waiting to see how good the H70 was but looking at the reviews I am now looking to up grade from my current CPU cooler (Titan fenrir with Apache Fan) to the NH-D14 as it looks like the best option for me and out there on the market at the present time, so I would love a chance of winning one in your competition and cooling down my hot very hot CPU.

[attach][/attach]

Since my original post I have changed my Thermal compound from Arctic Silver to MX-3 and also lapped both my CPU and base of the Titan Fenrir (it was not that flat!!), this has resulted in a reduction in temps, but when subjecting the system to a stress test with Prime95 I still reach temps in the high 90's but after 3 minutes, so thatÂ’s better than before but still lots of room for improvement, would love to try a NH-D14.Quote

I have fond memories of using Noctua products on my first real foray into performance PC building. I saved up my money from a part time job and bought a new PC along with a Noctua NH-U12F, one of their earlier products.

Over the years the cooler has done me proud, but once I upgraded to a quad it struggled in my case setup, and I had to let it go. I still have it, in a box here. If I won a new cooler in the competition I'd be willing to send the NH-U21F to one of the runners up for nothing, it's still got plenty of life left in it for someone, I'd be happy to spread the Noctua love that little bit further. I'd like to know it was going to a good home where it'll be put to good use!

Here's an image of the cooler ready to cool my old E6750. Served me brilliantly, and I really wanted a new Noctua high end cooler (this was the best at the time!) but I couldn't afford it as I wasn't working regularly any more.

http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/w...4/100_2928.jpg

It's difficult (if not, impossible!) to beat the quality and performance of Noctua products, anyone who wins one is very lucky indeed, the NH-D14 is an awesome cooler and unrivalled in it's class. I'd check it fits in your case first though! I would love to win one, hence the post here. Great competition OC3D, really impressed!

Onwards..............

Now, not everyone likes the colour scheme of Noctua products, but I think it's important for branding and distinction. I don't think they look bad to be honest. Take a look at these brilliant new branding and promotional ideas (Noctua feel free to use them if you want!):

Sponsor a Noctua Penguin! What could be cooler? Notice how this penguin looks a little cold. Why is that? Well, many would say it's because of the difficult, harsh environmental conditions, but they're wrong. This is a Noctua pengiun, so he's very chilly indeed! You can tell the Noctua penguins apart from normal ones as they are beige and brown:

http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/w...24/pengiun.jpg

OK, so perhaps the penguin idea was a little cruel, we would have to paint them, and I'm not sure how easy it is to even catch one, they look like slippery customers!

Fear not, as I always have more ideas.

I propose simple, yet decidedly subtle branding on important members of society.

Take this image of the 38th Governor of California - no doubt a very important man and seen on TV everywhere. Observe the subtle Noctua branding across the forehead and imagine the exposure to your products! Arranging this may be pricey, but it should pay for itself, eventually.

http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/w...arzenegger.jpg

I've also noticed the Noctua company logo is an owl? Some sort of owl triangle circuit board thing, in short, it's not clear. How about some clarification of what Noctua means? Since it is indeed a type of owl, and owls are known for being particularly trustworthy (not to mention expert air coolers), I present an alternative logo below. This owl looks worth trusting no? The cursory wink and reassuring 'thumbs-up' make you feel like you're in a good place. You can trust Noctua owl.

http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/w.../noctuaowl.jpg

Hopefully you can look past the crude image manipulation and occasional faux-pas and see your future Noctua!

I await your reply with anticipation.Quote

I agree. I'm not entering simply because I don't NEED a new cooling solution since I've got the Mega Shadow on my Q8200. Sure, I'd love a D14, but there's people out there that actually need it, and by not entering they have a bigger chance of winning. Quote

I have a couple more ideas, would it be OK to add to my entry? I figured there's still about a week left to go so I thought I'd ask if that's allowed. It's all creative, of course.

Here's a short dirty Noctua poem (probably the first and last of it's kind!):

A geek met a gal at a brewer

He took her back home to do 'er

She said 'is it big?'

He thought of his rig

So instead he whipped out his Noctua!

I have yet another poem (more accurately limerick) that celebrates the success of our favourite cooling company:

Their products are beige and brown

They oft take the performance crown

They're top of the line

And get better with time

Noctua, the best firm in town!Quote

Just noticed the "EU entrants" only line. I am therefore ineligible for this contest.

Stock cooling is DISGUSTING...at least to me.

I've beared with these things in various shapes and sizes for over a decade now.

http://i390.photobucket.com/albums/o.../Photo0193.jpg

...until a machine actually went down under the HEAT.

http://i390.photobucket.com/albums/o...erbolefire.jpg

So what happened to the rest? Well to make a short story long, the Pentium 4 machine below with the Dell proprietary cooler is lame. It's an a small copper heatsink covered with a shroud to make the 80mm case fan double as the CPU fan. The biggest annoyance is the inability to work with this thing during those hot summer days here in Southern California. The fan is loud enough to be heard two rooms away.

http://i390.photobucket.com/albums/o.../Photo0194.jpg

http://i390.photobucket.com/albums/o.../Photo0195.jpg

To make that long story short, the stock cooling solution is lame.

Below, you will see my totally rad 140mm Noctua fan DOING SRS STU44

http://i390.photobucket.com/albums/o...o0197acopy.jpg

When I built my first machine, I made sure to have aftermarket cooling. Cool thing is I don't want to go back to stock. That's not even factoring in the OCing factor...

http://i390.photobucket.com/albums/o.../Photo0043.jpg

I always get positive feedback whenever someone sees my OCZ Vendetta, after all it was cheap. However, the thing about CPU heatsinks is that you can never get big enough. Your car can never go fast enough. Your money will never grow enough. Your girlfriend won't be pretty enough.

http://i390.photobucket.com/albums/o..._5162755_n.jpg

That's where the Noctua NH-D14 comes in...quite possibly the best air cooler available in North America while managing to stay quiet where you put it.

Alien is actually right as well, "Quad SLi" means two Nvidia dul-gpu solutions whacked together, whilst the correct term for, say 4 x GTX480's would be "4-Way SLi" under general concensus.

There's been some awesome entries here so far! XD

The thing is, my PC is a bit of a mess. I'm regularly swapping components around, trying new things, looking to tweak and perfect. Let me introduce my case in its current state;

As you can imagine, airflow isn't brilliant. I currently have a couple of Be Quiet! 120mm fans in the front of my Antec 300 but they're a bit lacking in oomph. Silence isn't really what's needed (though it is nice)... my HDDs and the current 4870X2 need a bit more of a breeze of fresh air.

Now, I heard the rumour mill has spawned a new bit of juicy gossip that Noctua have a bit of a deal going on with some non-PC related industries. We're all familiar I'm sure with the complaints of our other halves that the models in the girly mags are all photoshopped up (from the evidence of some of the other entries in this thread, maybe some of you guys are responsible ). In fact, the average model is supposedly akin to this charming young lady;

However, I hear that Noctua are actually doing deals with the beauty industry, and provide the fans and tubes of all that crap that's supposed to help out with "beauty enhancement"...

Which results in...

Sooo... the reason I'm entering is to try a bit of the

business - the great unique looks and powerful cooling of the latest Noctua fans would surely solve all my Antec 300 airflow problems or succeed my Fenrir!?! Quote

I've never had a cooler before, never really overclocked and currently have an old custom computer running an 8600GT. With the release of some nice bits of hardware lately, i'm hoping to get a new system in the (very) near future, and with that try out overclocking. And as I've heard with overclocking, you've gotta keep everything cool. So it would be awesome if I could reduce my budget a little bit and increase my overclocking capacity with one of these coolers!Quote

No surprise the best cooler comes from Austria, See this. They have some really groundbreaking scientists and more, therefore no surprise they have designed the best coolerQuote

I think that we need to teach everyone the dangers of not using the best kit when overclocking and cooling and what better way than to start by teaching children.

Here is a short bedtime story for you to tell your kids and also pass on an important message.

Once upon a time there were three CPUÂ’s and the time came for them to leave home and seek their fortunes.

Before they left, their mother told them "Whatever you do , do it the best that you can because that's the way to get along in the world, find a nice case but watch out for heat as it will kill you.”

http://i2.sqi.sh/s_1/2On/pigsandcpu.jpg

The first little cpu cooled himself with the stock fan because it was the easiest thing to do.

http://i2.sqi.sh/s_1/2On/core2quadstock.jpg

The second little cpu cooled himself with the stock fan and added a case fan too. This was a little bit cooler than just the stock fan.

http://i2.sqi.sh/s_1/2Os/core_i5_hsf2crop.jpg http://i2.sqi.sh/s_1/2Ot/casefan.jpg

The third little cpu cooled himself with a Noctua NH-D14 and also used a NF-P14, a NF-S12B and some NT-H1, all combined gave him brilliant cooling.

http://i2.sqi.sh/s_1/2On/noctuasmall.jpg

One night the big bad overclocker, who dearly loved maximum performance, came along and saw the first little cpu in his stock cooled case. He said "Let me clock you, Let me clock you, your speed I must multiply!"

"Do not clock me, do not clock me, for I will surely fry" said the little cpu.

But of course the overclocker had to try and the little cpu he did fry.

http://i2.sqi.sh/s_1/2Ov/fryegg.jpg

The overclocker then came to the case cooled by the stock fan and an extra case fan.

"Let me clock you, Let me clock you, your speed I must multiply!"

"Do not clock me, do not clock me, for I will surely fry" said the little cpu.

I have to try please don’t fry your speed I have to multiply. A speed increase “Wahey” he cried, until the cpu fried and died.

http://i2.sqi.sh/s_1/2Ow/tas100303.gif

The overclocker then came to the third cpu who was cooled by Noctua fans and thermal paste.

"Let me clock you, Let me clock you, your speed I must multiply!"

"Come and have a go if you think you are hard enough!” cried the third cpu.

http://i2.sqi.sh/s_1/2Ox/bacon-hitler.jpg

Well, he clocked and he tweaked and he saw his speeds rise. The temperature stayed low to the clockers surprise.

The cpu stayed cool, he never broke into a sweat, he said to the clocker “Noctua fans are the best you can get. Now enter me in a competition, I will serve you well, you will win all the prizes and your friends you can tell”

Moral of the story- Choose Noctua for ultimate cooling and performance, never use bacon as a fashion accessory!

Why should i win a prise(hopefully a NH-D14) in this Noctua Cooling competition contest?

Because of three reasons:

1.Because i know from where your brand name, "Noctua" cames and i can tell you what it means.

"Noctua" is the latin word for "owl". There also a specie of owl that is actually named "Noctua" : "Athene Noctua- european little owl" . This specie of owls while flying to haunt makes almost no noise, to surprise the pray. It makes less noise than other species of owls .

So this is resembling with Noctua fans which during cooling(working) makes almost no noise. . And also the fans are very efficient like the owl too.

Also i found i picture of this Noctua owl and i see a resemblence between the colour of Noctua's fans and the colour of the spots on the feathers of the Noctua owl.

2. Because i made a subscription to an IT magazine just because they offered as a gift a Noctua NF-P12 fan. See here the subscription page:

My link.

3. Because on my new sistem i'm using the stock Intel cooler because buying a GTX 460 VGA left me short on money. I will buy a NH-D14 cooler but i will not have enough money to buy it until the end of september. The waiting it's booring because the stock cooler is very noisy ant hot.

At the final, i wish good luck to all participants to the contest and i want to thank you Noctua and OC3D team for this contest! It's pretty rich in prises. Quote

These entries have been so fun to read and watch that I couldn't resist a try, even though I can't win.

Noctua has quite the selection

They have achieved cooling perfection

The D14

Beats all competition on scene

In fact it farts in their general direction.

or

Tom does reviews on OC3D

Noctua provides the samples we see

The D14 had such power

I nearly messed in my trousers

I wish they would give one to me

those or: I wish I could win cuz I've never won anything before Quote

In a nice sunny saturday, my wife sent me to the market. She was about to cook something. In that night i dreamed about having a Noctua cooler. I felt powerfull and strong. I dreamed that on my way home, everybody was looking at me.

Well in that saturday i wanted to buy potateos, salad, onions, i had even a list from my wife with "what to buy". Just before arriving to the market i saw one guy who just bought a NH-D14. I remember it felt good with one of that. I went to him and almost i beat him cause that box...that Noctua was mine. I wanted to have it and to give him all the potateos and onions all around the world for it. He didn`t let go to that box. I punched him, but i didn`t managed to grab that Noctua, i told him how much i want it, that i don`t care what will happen if i go home without vegetables and guess what, he opened the box, he grabbed the cooler and hit me with the empty box in my head and said i could keep only that for now. I lost the money for vegetables in this fight, i`ll go home, i don`t know what will happen` and what i`ll eat but i don`t really care cause maybe next time i can grab that cooler on my way to the market. I have the Noctua box now and i don`t care. All i miss...is that wonderfull cooler...

I wanted to add a bit more to my entry, not least because I felt I should put a bit more effort into it and the standard seems quite high from some who have much greater image manipulation skills than myself!

As a total non artist who hasn't drawn a picture since my early school days (and I was bad then!), I thought I'd challenge myself to do something original. So here it is, don't laugh because although I spent a fair amount of time doing it (this was rev 3) I know it's still not great. I found an awesome shot of the NH-D14 on the net so I thought I'd give it a try. Rubbish picture, but I'm sure we all agree it's a damn awesome cooler!

I finally got my DSLR back so I have pictures now. Before anyone asks, that is the stock cooler with the stock 60mm fan replaced with an 80mm fan, which is held in place by zip ties. The PC is on in the pictures, but my camera's shutter moves fast enough to get a still picture. As many of use know, LEDs totally screw pictures, hence the ghosting here; sorry about that. Anyway, here is my PC. Oh, and sorry if the quality is bad, my camera spits out ~3MB images, so I had to compress them.Quote

Ok, Ok. You are forcing me to do this. The thought of not winning this amazing cooler has driven me to desperate measures.

You see, I have rather...large ears. Every loud noise is excruciating! All air cooling fans are loud and hurt my ears. I have to run them so low that they are useless and I am a pathetically pathetic overclocker. please help me realize my overclocking dreams by providing me with this amazingly effective AND QUIET air cooler!

they say a picture is worth 1000 words, so let me show you why I need the quiet Noctua Dh-14:

Cheers Scrotie This comp has had so many positives.

I think it was the video that done it for me, the 3 little piggies thing had too much bacon in

Either way it well make my system alot quiter and keep our lass of my back.

I also now have windows movie maker and my camera dusted off so looking forward to more of the same. Quote

Dude I was actually writing a song I was going to sing too.

It was titled "Puff ! the magic Phenom" and the first few lines went like this...

Puff the magic Phenom, wouldn't overclock.

It just kept overheating because the cooler on it was stock !

Then one magic day, Noctua came to town, and stopped the mighty Phenom from burning & turning brown.Quote

I sing pretty well too. Never realised I had a singing voice 'til I married an American chick and ended up in a band (it's what they all do )

Here you go, off the top of my head...

I'll leave you to guess what it is (and if you don't know you deserve kicked balls !).

When you were here before,

Couldn't look you in the eye

You're such a sh*t cooler,

You make me cry

You float like a feather

In a beautiful world

I wish I was Noctua

They're so fuc**n' special

But my cooler's cheap,

My cooler's gaymo

What the hell is it doin' here?

It don't belong here

I don't care if it hurts,

I wanna have control

I wanna big fat Noctua

I want to just fold

But my cooler's cheap,

My cooler's gaymo

What the hell is it doin' here?

It don't belong hereQuote

Not much point mate tbh. 940 has the Corsair on with dual fans and dual shrouds. It's so cool it's a joke, and I really don't want to pull that machine apart again.

It'll go in the other one on the 9950 plus it'll clear the ram in there.

I've just noticed too that in the second machine the PSU is now making a whistling sound. It doesn't rain it bloody pours It might be out of comission for a while whilst I save for another PSU (and I may aswell go kilowatt so I can do this quadfire thing) So it'll need to come apart. I'll whack it in then

It actually overclocks very well. Was so darn easy getting it to 3ghz. 127w TDP which is awesome and 33 idle with 62 load. I did notice a nice burning smell though, think it was the capacitors wearing in lol.Quote

Id just use the Noctua on the machine you use the most. As once the fan speed adapters are on its silent Quote

TBH Tom I use them equally mate.

The Silverstone I use all day, but noise in the day doesn't bother me. Thankfully the fans in it are amazingly quiet. The Alienware? gawd. It's full of yate loons and a 3870x2 revving away. That's the rig I use for bed, so the quieter the better tbh.

Oddly that one has a 92mm Noctua in the HDD bay, and I cannot friggin wait to get rid of the NH92 out of there. It's running a Yate and a Scythe, neither are quiet being massive RPM fans.

Sleep is what I need. I'm tired of waking up for a wee and then it whirring away so loudly I can't get back to sleep.Quote

Tbh im still running amy AC7 in one of my q6600 systems and its still handles at stock speeds and volts perfectly well abit its getting old and noisy now. How ever adding a high story building to my system doesn't interest me (esp now ive just seen the price of that monster) as i would still like to keep to my WCing efforts.

im not saying its a bad cooler as i dont know just saying its way to big and seems over kill to me. It would be interesting to put some thing like that up against a semi decent (2 x 120mm) water cooling system and compare results make for a dammed good read and nice review.

Mind you if i was given one i wouldn't complain as id hammer the hell out of it hehe.Quote

it wouldnt be a match for a proper wc set up that is fact, but as the simples that is air cooling goes you cant beat it it cools epic it mounts super easy and concidering the colour choices of noctua fans looks pretty bitchinQuote

For ÂŁ60 mate it would walk over a WC kit. The noctua is the reason I went back to air. Its quieter than two 120mm fans blowing through a rad aswell.

Now we all know what I was like with water, and for a high end rig its fine but for the average joe enthusiast you dont HAVE to ahve water for silly clocks and quietness any more.Quote

Right. It's time to end the big black hole when it comes to the NH14 and AMD.

I'm going to take off the 12CP after recording the temps, remove the ram that hasn't been snapped down and get this bugger in so I can know once and for all how this beast will cool a P2.

Wish me luck, and if I'm not back by 5pm send out a search party.Quote

Look what came last week!!!

On opening and looking and feeling the product, I can't believe how good quality it really is. I've missed using Noctua coolers since my last one. They really are second to none when it comes to build, as you can see above.

I was trying out some small lighting for the photos at the same time as photographing something else, so I thought I'd put the NH-U12P up there and it looks great.

I got a Corsair H50 for a very good price quite a while ago now, so I'm not sure which one to stick with. I'll have to test both, though the H50 is more practical (as I move the PC a lot in the car) but the Noctua is so much nicer in general. Probably quieter too.

Once it's in I'll put up some installation pics for y'all.

Thanks again to OC3D and Noctua for this competition.Quote

Me neither. When I've got some time to take the rig apart (very busy at uni atm) at Christmas I'll post up some performance figures.Quote

They're good. Not groundbreaking but good. Mate has one on his I7 920. Very VERY quiet though.Quote
